When to Replace Your Tires: 5 Warning Signs

Migos Tires LLC · Richmond, VA

Tires don't usually fail all at once — they give you warning signs first. Here's what to actually look for, in plain language.

1. The penny test (tread depth)

Put a penny in your tire's tread groove, Lincoln's head pointing down. If you can see all of his head, your tread is worn down to 2/32" or less — the point most states consider unsafe. Check a few spots around each tire, since wear isn't always even.

2. Uneven wear patterns

Tread wearing faster on one side, or in a cupped/scalloped pattern, usually points to an alignment or suspension issue rather than the tire itself. Worth having someone actually look at it rather than just replacing the tire and having it happen again.

3. Cracks, bulges, or bubbles on the sidewall

These are structural issues, not cosmetic ones. A bulge means the internal belts have separated in that spot — that tire can fail without warning, including at highway speed. If you see one, get it looked at before you drive on it much more.

4. Vibration at speed

A new vibration that shows up around 50-60 mph can be a tire balance issue, a bent wheel, or internal tire damage. It's not always the tire, but it's always worth checking rather than living with it.

5. Age — even with tread left

Rubber degrades over time regardless of mileage. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires around 6-10 years from the manufacture date, even if the tread still looks fine. You can find the manufacture date stamped on the sidewall (a 4-digit DOT code — the last two digits are the year).
